Dorothy G. O'Donnell

Dorothy G. O'Donnell died peacefully at Berkshire Place on Sept. 3, remaining lively and vibrant to the last lay of her incredibly long life. Dorothy was born in Hudson, NY on February 14, 1914, to William Anthony and Mabel Canon Gross. The family moved to Pittsfield, MA when she was two. She graduated with highest honors from Pittsfield High School in 1932 and from the former Berkshire Business College.

She was employed as a secretary in the Power Transformer Engineering Dept. of General Electric prior to her marriage to William P. O'Donnell in June 1940. Her husband, Bill, died in 1993, and her daughter Sally Spina in 2016.

She is survived by her son, Thomas A. O'Donnell and wife, Leslie, of Venice, FL, her daughter Pam Oakes and husband, Gordon of South Deerfield, MA. And son in law, the Hon. Francis X. Spina of Pittsfield, MA.

She also leaves seven grandchildren, Kevin, Brian, and Tim Oakes, Francesca and Stephanie Spina, and Kaitlin and Michael O'Donnell. She also welcomed three step-grandchildren, Katherine, Laura and Ned Curley into her family.

There were also seven great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews as well as her dear sister in law, Marjorie Hickey and nephew, Bob Hickey.

While raising three children Dorothy was a superb homemaker, excellent cook and seamstress. She was a multi- tasker all her life, finding time to volunteer for several organizations, Refield School PTA, Girl Scouts and St. Teresa's Church CCD. In 196 she returned to work at General Electric in the former Naval Ordinance Systems as a secretary.

Dot and Bill also found pleasure in traveling south to Florida and abroad to Spain. In earlier years they vacationed yearly with Dot's sister, Better and her husband, Ed. All avid bridge players. Dot's brother Bill and wife, Dot were also frequent dinner companions. Life in the O'Donnell household was made considerable livelier by Bill's many sisters and brothers and their families.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Berkshire Place for taking good care of their mother and grandmother these last few years and asks that any donations be to the Residents Activity Fund at Berkshire Place, 290 South Street., Pittsfield, MA. She made several friends while there and always loved visitors.

O'Donnell, Dorothy G., age 103, died Sept. 3rd at Berkshire Place. Private funeral services will be held at the Devanny-Condron Funeral Home followed with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at St. Joseph's Church with Msgr. Michael A. Shershanovich, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
