Edward J. Apple, Jr.  CPA

Edward J. Apple Jr. 93, passed away March 10th at home surrounded by his family.  Born in Greenfield on February 26, 1924, the son of Edward J. and Mildred C. Gardner Apple, he graduated from St. Joseph’s High School in 1941 and from Bentley School of Accounting and Finance in 1943.  Upon graduation, he enlisted in the US Army and served with the 104th Timberwolf Infantry Division in the European Theater earning the Bronze Star.  He was honorably discharged on December 7, 1945.  He became a Certified Public Accountant and was employed by Price Waterhouse in New Jersey.  He returned to Pittsfield in 1950 and formed the partnership, Apple & Albano in 1954, with Joseph J. Albano. 

He was predeceased by his wife of 69 years Mary Phyllis Welch Apple (November 7, 2016).  He was a loving and devoted father to 5 daughters, Daryl A. Belanger, Karen E. Guidice (Frank), Ellen M. Apple, Margaret A. Dube, Elizabeth M. Brockley and 8 sons, David W. (Mary Jane), Thomas R. (Wendy), John J. (Alison), Peter J. (Theresa), Michael J. (Aydee), Christopher P. (Linda), Patrick C. (Tracey), Timothy E. (Patricia).  He also leaves 29 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.

He is also survived by his sisters, Marie Karg of Nashua, NH and Patricia McNiece of  Naples, FL, a brother-in-law, Richard Welch of Charlotte, NC, and a sister-in-law, Ann Frey of San Diego, CA, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Ed was an avid Red Sox, Patriots, and Celtics fan.   He also enjoyed golf, poker, horse racing, camping and the beach.   Throughout his life he volunteered at various civic and religious organizations. Edward was the first 6th grader at State Line one room school house.  He was also an active Boy Scout, Eagle Scout, and Scoutmaster.  His greatest joy was listening to his children performing music.

Apple, Edward J., Jr, of Pittsfield, died March 10th, Calling hours at the DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME will be WEDNESDAY from 4 to 7.  Funeral services  will take place on Thursday  beginning at  9 am   with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 am at Sacred Heart Church with the Rev. Michael Bernier, pastor, officiating  .  Burial will follow in  St. Joseph’s Cemetery.  

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires or Sacred Heart Church in care of the funeral home.
