With heavy hearts and cherished memories, we announce the passing of Mary "Kathy" O'Donnell, who departed from this world on February 15, 2024, at the age of 86.
Born on April 23, 1937, to her loving parents Harry and Virginia (Supka) Szklasz, Mary's life was a testament to warmth, kindness, and boundless love.
Mary's journey was one of dedication and service. After graduating from Pittsfield High School with the class of 1955, she pursued her passion for nursing at the Henry W. Bishop III Memorial School of Nursing, graduating in 1958. Her compassionate nature and skillful care touched countless lives during her tenure as a registered nurse at St. Luke's Hospital. Later, she continued her noble profession alongside Dr. George Porter and Dr. Brian Dempsey.
An active member of the community, Mary found joy and companionship in her involvement with the Pittsfield Senior Center and the Nurses Alumni Association. Her zest for life was infectious, evident in her love for travel, literature, card games, golf, music, and the culinary arts.
In 1959, Mary exchanged vows with her beloved husband, John "Jack" O'Donnell, at Sacred Heart Church, marking the beginning of a beautiful partnership that lasted until Jack's passing on February 7, 2019. Together, they navigated life's highs and lows with unwavering devotion. Mary is survived by her devoted daughter, Laurie O'Donnell (Maryanne Sollomi) of Haverhill, MA, and her son, Stephen O'Donnell (Judy), of Brunswick, NY. Her legacy continues through her cherished grandchildren, Lauren O'Donnell and Andrew O'Donnell, who were a source of immeasurable pride and joy to her.
In the embrace of eternal rest, Mary reunites with her late brother, Edward Szklasz, and leaves behind a legacy of love and compassion that will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
