Tribute

Stephen Gary Pidcoe, a resident of Pittsfield, passed away peacefully at his home early on Saturday morning following a recent decline in health.

Born in Newark, NJ on September 9, 1957, Steve was a son of the late Gertrude Smith Pidcoe. He was raised in Lenox and was a graduate of Lenox High School. As a child, Steve suffered from cerebral palsy and learned to overcome the many challenges he faced with this disease. In 1963, he was honored as the “poster child” for cerebral palsy for the Berkshire County chapter.

Steve served as a volunteer fireman for the Lenox Fire Department for many years and would share the stories often. He was so proud of the work he did with the LFD.

He married the former Michelle Gasson on June 16, 1986 at St. Mary’s Church in Pittsfield. They would have celebrated 38 years of marriage this coming June.

He was a talented woodworker and made many toys for his nieces and nephews over the years. He also enjoyed putting together model cars and was an avid NASCAR fan. He collected all things Dale Ernhardt Jr.

Stephen loved his pets and enjoyed chasing their dogs around the yard. He will be missed by their most recent dog Tango.

Stephen and his wife Michelle were the go to aunt and uncle for babysitting, and they cherished every minute of it. Steve’s favorite summer activities included swimming, drinking a cold Budlight by the water and spending time with his family.

In the early years of their marriage, Steve and Shelle spent many summers camping in Old Orchard Beach, Maine and visiting family in Hampton Beach, New Hampshire.

In addition to his beloved wife, Stephen is survived by his sisters, Paulette Silva Smith of Maine and Kathleen Guercio and her husband Paul of Alabama, several nieces, nephews and extended family members, and his dear cousin Robert Whitney of NH. Steve was predeceased by his brother Charles “Larry” Pidcoe and his wife Donna, his sister (??) Wendy Cimini, and his brothers-in-law, Milton and Mark Gasson.

A special thanks goes out to Shelle’s nieces, nephews and friends for being by her side over the last few months and for helping to care for Stephen.

There are no services scheduled at this time.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made payable to “Hospice Care in the Berkshires” and mailed to the Devanny-Condron Funeral Home at 40 Maplewood Ave. Pittsfield, MA 01201
