December 10, 1938 ~ February 5, 2017 (age 78) 78 Years Old

Thomas Edward McGill, 78, died peacefully with his wife, Nancy, by his side at Berkshire Medical Center on Sunday, February 5th.   He was born on December 10, 1938 to James E. and Catherine (Flynn) McGill in Pittsfield.

Tom, a life-long resident of Pittsfield, attended local schools and graduated from Pittsfield High School, class of ’56. He attended  Georgetown University, graduated from North Adams State College, and earned a B.A. degree in English in 1964. Later he received a Masters degree in English from North Adams State.

Tom had a 35 year year-long career teaching English. Most of his career was spent teaching at Taconic High School from 1967 until his retirement in 2000. There he delighted in teaching students of all levels and prepared many to enter college. He eventually served as Chairmen of the English Department.

In retirement, Tom enjoyed horse racing, golfing at Wahconah Country Club, and traveling. With his wife, Nancy he visited Bermuda, Sedona, AZ, San Diego CA, Nantucket MA, Hilton Head, SC, St. Pete’s Beach, FL and Oqunquit, ME.

Tom  was an avid reader, often reading three newspapers a day. He also enjoyed reading books about sports, history, and crime. His love of sports began in his youth at the Boy Club and in Little League and grew through the years. He remained a loyal Red Sox and Patriots fan and, recently, loved following UCONN girls basketball.

Tom has a keen wit and unique sense of humor. He will be remembered for his jokes, his hearty laugh, and his banter about sports, politics, and life with is many friends. Tom considered himself to be a “social critic” and an astute observer of human nature. In daily life, he practiced the Golden Rule and appreciated all who did the same.

Tom is predeceased by his parents, his brother James F. McGill and his sister, Catherine M. Dunsmore.
