Ellen Young

June 18, 1938 ~ April 9, 2023 (age 84) 84 Years Old

Tribute

Ellen Margaret Young, age 84, passed peacefully into arms of Jesus on Easter April 9, 2023, in the comfort of her own home in Hinsdale, MA.
Born on June 18, 1938 in Pittsfield, MA, a daughter of the late Helen (Killeen) and John H. Burns. She grew up here in our community and went on to graduate from Pittsfield High School in 1956. After high school, she began her career in secretary work at G.E. In the spring of the next year, on April 27, 1957 she married John "Jackie" H. Young and together were blessed to raise 4 children. The family moved to Becket where they lived until 2016.
Ellen stayed at home raising and caring for her children, and as they grew up she returned to work at the Becket-Washington School as secretary to the Principle. She began working at the Becket Town Hall in 1975 and was eventually voted in as a tax collector for one term. After 5 years working in the town hall, she decided to take a new challenge and begin working for the Becket Post Office in 1981. After 19 years of service to the post office, she retired in 2000 as Post Master.
Retirement looked good on Ellen, together her and her husband retired to Leesburg, Florida where they would live a 6 month on lifestyle, coming back to the Berkshires for the warmer months. Eventually, Ellen found herself a part of the Mid Florida Lake Bocce club, and put her skills to work taking on the role of secretary for the club. During the last year of her life, she also attributed her skills to the Country Road Co-Op in Hinsdale. Ellen was more than just a hard working wife and mother. One of her biggest prides was her Catholic faith and her 99.9% Irish bloodline. Travel kept Ellen on the go, favoring places such as Lancaster, PA to admire the Amish communities there, family trips to Cape Cod and to Las Vegas. As sweet and gentle as she was, she would have no shame in beating her family in a game of bocce or striking down candle pins at the bowling alley.
Ellen and her daughter Mary Ellen had a 20 year tradition of tag sale-ing every Saturday and she loved a good bargain. The family enjoyed countless Friday night card games together and Ellen's contribution of apple pie will be greatly missed.
In addition to her beloved husband Jackie, she is survived by her four children, Mary Ellen Chavarry (Frank) of Dalton, Pat Young (Mary Scott) of Pittsfield, Jack Young of Pittsfield, and Sandi Girard (Michael) of Hinsdale. Ellen had 9 grandchildren and she was predeceased by her oldest, Jai Chavarry on December 15, 2022, leaving behind Daulton, Paige, and Brooke Young, Christopher, Jeremy and Sarah Girard, and Heather and Kristen Chavarry. She also leaves behind her brother, John Burns (Cheryl), in-laws Paul, Judy, and Ernie Young, and 10 precious great grandchildren, 5 most adored fur babies and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her sister, Ann Donovan, in 2018.
The Young family wishes to extend a special thanks Ellen's hospice nurse Missy for the wonderful care she provided.
