Mrs. Geralyn Gros Barschdorf, age 80, of Pittsfield, died Sunday evening, May 6th at her home following a brief illness. She was born in Bennington, VT, Oct. 24, 1937, the daughter of the late Louis and Grace (Sumner) Gros. She was educated in the elementary schools there and was a 1955 graduate of Bennington High School. Continuing her education, she graduated from St. Joseph's Business College, which was the forerunner of Southern Vermont College. Mrs. Barschdorf was employed initially at Bennington Pottery for a period and after her marriage, she moved to make her home in Florence, MA with her late husband, William L. Barschdorf. She became employed at the Prophylactic Brush Co. in Florence prior to moving to Springfield in 1958. She and her husband moved to Pittsfield in 1966 upon her husband becoming employed at the General Electric Co.. Together with her husband, they moved with their family to Dalton in 1969 and she became employed at the former Dalton Pharmacy for nine years and later at the former Benny's Restaurant for several years.
She and her late husband, Bill, returned to Pittsfield in 1983.
An avid Red Sox fan and N.E. Patriots fan, she enjoyed all forms of handcrafts including sewing, knitting, embroidery and crocheting. An accomplished baker and cook, she enjoyed reading and her long time subscription to Women's World.
Her greatest joy was her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren as she followed all of their activities including their athletic accomplishments.
She was predeceased by her husband, Bill, who passed away March 19, 2018. They were married Oct. 19, 1957 in Bennington and celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary Oct. 2017.
She is survived by her four children, Fred and his wife, Karen (Fletcher) of Pittsfield, William Jr. and his wife, Rosemary (Hitt) of Dalton, Nancy Quetti and her husband Russell of Pittsfield and Julie Maffuccio and her husband Daniel of Dalton, her 11 grandchildren, Erica Roccabruna (Matthew), Scott Barschdorf (Kari), Jenna Duquette (David II), Brendan Barschdorf and his fiance' Leah Gary, Kaylene Austin (James), Jeffrey Quetti, triplets, Rachel, Jacqueline and Diana Quetti, and Matthew and Ryan Maffuccio, her five great-grandchildren, Shane and Evan Roccabruna, David III and Jax Duquette and Brady Barschdorf, her sister, Diane Cardinal of Stonington, CT and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express its sincere appreciation to all of her caregivers both at BMC and at home, who provided her with comfort and heartfelt conversation throughout her recent illness, as well as HospiceCare in the Berkshires for their care and support.
Barschdorf, Geralyn Gros, age 80 of Pittsfield, died Sunday, May 6th at home. Calling hours at the Devanny-Condron Funeral Home will be held FRIDAY from 3 to 6. Funeral services will begin immediately following with the Rev. Steven G. Montesanti, pastor of St. John Paul II parish in Adams, officiating. Cremation will take place with burial to follow in the Pittsfield Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Humane Society in care of the funeral home.
