Pittsfield – James R. McCaffrey, 82, passed away Friday, January 12th at the Berkshire Medical Center. Jim was born in Pittsfield in 1935, a son of the late Peter F. and Mary (Delaney) McCaffrey. He attended the local schools, and was a graduate of St. Joseph’s High School. Continuing his education, Jim did post graduate work at the former Lenox School for Boys, and then went on to receive his Baccalaureate degree from Bryant College. He served in the U.S. Army for a total of two years, 16 months of which he spent in Korea. Jim then went on to work for the General Electric Company Ordnance Systems plant where he was employed as an analyst and retired after a devoted 31 years. He was also a self-employed tax consultant for many years.

Jim loved Pittsfield and was very active in the community. He was a long time communicant of Sacred Heart Church, and was also a former 10 year member of the City Council of Pittsfield and Chairman of the Pittsfield Zoning Board of Appeals for 5 years. He also served on various boards of directors, including Junior Achievement of Central Berkshire, Pittsfield G.E. Employees Credit Union, the Brien Center, and the G.E. Quarter Century Club as a past president. Additionally he served with the Realty Trust of the ITAM Lodge #564 and was a former member of the advisory committee of the McGee Unit at Hillcrest Hospital.

Jim and his wife Fran, the former Frances E. Viscuso, had been married for 58 wonderful years.
Besides his wife, Jim is survived by his three children, Peter W. McCaffrey and his wife Sheila of Amenia, NY, John F. McCaffrey and his wife Eileen of Belle Mead, NJ, and Mary Jane Piasecki and her husband Stu of Quincy, MA. He is also survived by his five grandchildren, Caitlin, Keely, Patrick, Delaney and Colin, his brother, Robert D. McCaffrey and his wife Terry of Henderson, Nevada and his sister, Ann C. McCaffrey of Pittsfield.

Services: McCaffrey, James R., age 82, died January 12th. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held Friday, January 19th at 11 am at Sacred Heart Church with the Rev. Michael Bernier, pastor, officiating. Please meet directly at the Church. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Lee. There will be no calling hours.
The Devanny-Condron Funeral Home has been entrusted with Mr. McCaffrey’s funeral services.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Boys & Girls Club of Berkshire County or St. Joseph’s Food Pantry in care of the funeral home.
