Tribute

John E. “Jack” Carroll, age 83, of Pittsfield passed away unexpectedly at Berkshire Medical Center on Tuesday, September 20, 2022.

Born in Pittsfield on November 23, 1938, Jack was a son of the late Eva (Panetti) and Edward F. Carroll. He graduated as the Valedictorian with the 1956 class at St. Joseph’s High School and he then went on to earn his degree from the former North Adams State College. He served in the US Army Reserves for 6 years and was stationed at Fort Dix. He spent many summers working as a Pittsfield Park Police Officer.

Jack, or “Mr. C” as so many of his students lovingly called him, was an educator with the City of Pittsfield for 36 total years. He spent 18 years at South Jr. High and 18 years at Pittsfield High School. As a social studies teacher, Mr. C organized the notorious mock trials each year and held the mock elections in the springtime. He retired in 1999.

Jack loved to swim and was proud to have swam the entire perimeter of Pontoosuc Lake. He had the best lawn in the entire neighborhood. It was always the greenest and never had a weed to be seen. He also enjoyed movies and had a nightly routine to rent a movie from East Street Video and would go to the movies every Sunday.

Jack is survived by his son, Sean F. Carroll and his wife Susan of Dalton, his daughter Alison C. Worrick and her late husband James C. Worrick of Pittsfield, his granddaughter Corinna Carroll, his grandson Eric Worrick, his brother Edward Carroll of La Grange, IL, his nephews Chris, Eddie, and Tom Carroll, his niece Cathy Hernandez and many aunts, uncles, and cousins and extended members of Elaine's family. In addition to his parents, Jack was predeceased by his nephew Michael Carroll, his former wife Elaine K. Baum, and his sisters-in-law Karen Carroll and Sue Coughlin.

Thank you to all who had taken care of our Dad, including his longtime physician, Dr. Patricia Lehmann, many other doctors around the City of Pittsfield, Wingate Residences at Melbourne Place, Hillcrest Commons memory unit and business staff, Dr. Nicoletti and nurses Heather and Maddy at the BMC Emergency Department.

Funeral services were held privately for Jack’s family. Burial took place at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Devanny-Condron Funeral Home.

Memorial donations in memory of Jack may be made payable to “Hillcrest Commons Activities Fund” and mailed to the funeral home at 40 Maplewood Ave. Pittsfield, MA 01201
