Lionel A. Kelly Jr., age 72, died Monday, March 16, 2020 at his home in Pittsfield surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Pittsfield on October 9, 1947, he was a son of the late Lionel A. Kelly Sr. and Sara (Makela) Kelly. Lionel was raised in New York State and was a 1967 graduate of Berlin Central High School. After graduation, he went on to join the US Army on September 9, 1969, and spent nearly two years overseas having served in the Korean War.
Upon his return home following an honorable discharge, Lionel began working for General Electric Company. A hard working man, he was a proud husband, father and grandfather. He married the former Patricia J. White on October 7, 1988 in Pittsfield.
Lionel enjoyed playing Bingo at the Elks Club and he loved country music and watching country western movies. For the last three years, Lionel and Patricia were members of Jacob's Well Fellowship of Cambridge, NY, and together they enjoyed their weekly visit to Bible study. On October 7, 2019, they were able to renew their wedding vows at the Fellowship.
A true animal lover, Lionel leaves his Siberian husky named Sadie, his sheltie named Zoey, 5 cats, Tiny, Bandit, Mittens, Cricket and Ty, and his bird named Petey.
In addition to his wife, Lionel is survived by his 7 children, Mark Wnek of Pittsfield, Lauriann Bigelow (Edward) of Pittsfield, Jamie Kelly (Amber) of North Adams, Tanya Kelly (Gary Hunt) of Tolland, CT, Tammy Kelly of Averill Park, NY, Stacey Ellery of Pittsfield and Shaun Kelly (Kristen) of Saratoga Springs, NY, 16 grandchildren, his “little angel” Liliana and 3 other great grandchildren. He also leaves his sister Kathleen Kelly Staples (Tom Bernier) of Petersburg, NY and many nieces and nephews.
Lionel was predeceased by his parents, 4 brothers, Gordon Kelly Sr., Philip, James and Roger Kelly, and his sister Margaret “Peg” Ellen Kelly Fuller.
SERVICES: Funeral services will be held privately for the Kelly family. Burial with full military honors will take place at a later date to be announced.
