Mary Elizabeth (Tarbox) Greene, age 81, of Pittsfield died Sunday, November 12, 2023 at the Berkshire Medical Center after a recent decline in health.
Mary was born in Newburyport, MA on September 8, 1942 and was a daughter of the late Agnes and Harold Tarbox. She was a 1960 graduate of Immaculate Conception High School in Newburyport. Following graduation, Mary worked as a bookkeeper for Raytheon before her marriage to Darold P. Greene on March 31, 1963.
Mary quickly learned the role of being a Military Wife. She and Darold lived in many places as his career progressed, and she encouraged him every step of the way. As their family grew, so did Mary's love and generosity for her family. She was a wonderful mother to her three children and ensured they were settled with each move. Some of the places they lived were Newport News, VA, Austin, TX, Groton, CT, Hawaii, Guam, Pennsylvania and Florida. In 1984, Lieutenant Commander Greene's career brought them to Pittsfield, MA where their family finally settled down.
Mary was a woman of great faith and was a longtime member of Sacred Heart Church. She was generous beyond measure and was given an award for having hand crafted over 100 blankets for Project Linus. She loved to crochet and often could create a gift at a moment's notice.
Mrs. Greene was incredibly smart and loved all puzzles. She also enjoyed her nightly routine of watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy, and her family always watched in amazement as she would often answer the questions before the contestants did.
Many will remember Mary's famous beef jerky that she meticulously made in an old school method, her chicken nuggets and her famous garlic dressing. She loved all holidays and went out of her way to decorate her home according to the season, but Mrs. Greene especially loved fall in New England.
She was an avid sports fan and loved the Boston Red Sox and the Dallas Cowboys.
Mary is survived by her children, Laurie Ann Greene, Paula Greene Kostyun and her husband Michael, and Eric Price Greene and his soulmate Tonya Courtney, all of Pittsfield, her granddaughter Emma Rose Kostyun and great granddaughter Isabelle Davis. Mary also leaves her brother Harold "Buster" Tarbox and his wife Barbara of CT, her sister Kathleen Baker and her husband Alan of FL, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her beloved husband, Lieutenant Commander (Ret.) Darold P. Greene, who died September 5, 2017 after 54 years of marriage, Mary is predeceased by her sisters, Frances (Henry) Reslewic and Eleanor Rose.
