Nancy L. (Foley) Mickle, 78, a longtime resident of Pittsfield died on Monday, September 4, 2017 at Hillcrest Commons Nursing Home in Pittsfield.

Born in Pittsfield on March 6, 1939, she was the daughter of the late John E. and Rose (Sweet) Foley. Nancy was a graduate of Pittsfield High School and Berkshire Business College in Pittsfield.

 Following graduation she was employed by Berkshire Life Insurance Co. as a secretary for five years. She then became the Administrative Assistant to the director of Adult Education for the Pittsfield School Department and served as a secretary for the night school for nine years. Nancy then served as the Head Clerk of personnel in the Department of Public Works before retiring in 2002 with 28 years of service.

Nancy was a former communicant of St. Charles Church where she also taught C.C.D. and was a Eucharistic Minister. She also was a Eucharistic Minister for St. Joseph Church and was a member of St. Ann’s Society there. She was a member of the board of Pittsfield Irish Sister City of Ballina, Co. Mayo of Ireland, and a member of the Irish American Organization. She was a R.S.V.P. volunteer at the administrative office of the Pittsfield Visitors Center and other R.S.V.P. services.

Nancy devoted her time to charitable works by volunteering for soup kitchens, Brightside, and was in support of the Jimmy Fund, Diabetes, and Heart Associations. She belonged to the Camellia Red Hat Society, and was a true fan of the Boston Red Sox. Nancy was involved for many years with her parents in horse racing in Saratoga, NY and Pownal, VT.

A loving mother, Nancy is survived by her three sons, Mr. Robert J. Mickle Jr. and his wife Janet of Lanesborough, Dr. John E. Mickle of Pittsfield, and Mr. Andrew F. Mickle and his wife Kelly of Pittsfield. She also leaves her four beloved grandchildren: Travis, Luke, Paige, and Brady. 

Nancy was predeceased by her first husband, Robert J. Mickle Sr. whom she married June 25, 1960. He died June 13, 1999.  Her second husband, James J. Smith, whom she married on March 23, 2002, died Sept. 14, 2015.

Nancy was a caring and loving mother, grandmother, spouse and friend, and we can remember her signature phrase, “Always remember me, as always loving you.” Her family will always remember her.

Mickle, Nancy L., age 78, of Pittsfield, died Monday, Sept. 4th. Calling hours at the DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME will be Friday, September 8th from 4-7pm. A Graveside Service will be held Saturday, September 9th at 11am at the Cemetery of the Evergreens in New Lebanon. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to Hospice Care in the Berkshires, in care of the funeral home.
