Roger C. Walczyk, age 98, was reunited with his beloved Patricia on Monday, August 22, 2022, the day before what would have been their 75th wedding anniversary. He died at Mount Carmel Care Center where he had resided since 2017. Roger was a patient and kind man who embodied the definition of being a true gentlemen.

 

Born in Pittsfield on April 17, 1924, Roger was the son of the late Bronislaw and Wladislawa (Zisk) Walczyk. He was a 1942 graduate of Pittsfield High School and attended Bryant College prior to enlisting in the US Army during World War II. While serving in the Us Army Corp of Engineers, Roger was awarded the Victory Medal, The European African Middle Eastern Theatre Campaign Ribbon, and the Good Conduct Medal. In 2016 Roger accompanied by his oldest son Dan, was among Veterans chosen to take part in an honor flight to the World War II Memorial in Washington D.C.

 

Roger married the former Patricia Skidd on August 23, 1947 at St Teresa Church in Pittsfield. They were married for 62 wonderful years before her passing on May 15, 2010. Together they loved dancing and travelling to Aruba, Canada, Hawaii, Ireland, and Italy.

 

Roger worked for Gillette as a market researcher for 35 years before he retired. After retiring he and his wife Pat worked for his son Stan at O’Laughlins Home Care Pharmacy and spent over 20 years as delivery ambassadors. Roger’s hobbies included golfing, fishing, playing cards and attending air shows. On his 90th birthday he took a ride in a Piper Cub Airplane.

 

Roger is survived by his children, Dan (Sandy) Walczyk of Williamsburg, VA, Stan (Paula) Walczyk of Dalton, MA, Patti (Peter) Baran of Bluffton, SC, Mary Beth (David) Driscoll of Bridgewater, MA. His grandchildren whom he adored, Kate (Lorenzo) Definti, John Walczyk, Melissa (Ben) Sciola, Jenifer (Anthony) Butler, Lucas (Alessandra) Baran, Matthew (Catherine) Baran, Erin (Christopher) Henderson, and Mark (Emily) Driscoll. Roger also leaves his 12 beloved great grandchildren, Norina, Liliana, Thomas, Ginevra, Nicholas, Madison, Savannah, Wesley, Olivia, Victoria, Cecilia and Cole, as well as a 13th great grandchild on the way and many nieces and nephews.

 

In addition to his wife Pat, Roger was predeceased by his siblings Ken, Walter and Jean, and his infant son Stephen.

 

The Walczyk family would like to extend a special thanks to Melbourne Place and Mt. Carmel Care Center, especially the staff on the St. Luke Unit, for the extraordinary care their dad received in the many years he lived there. A special thank you to Michael Traylor, CNA who stayed with Roger until family arrived.

 

SERVICES: A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated on MONDAY, Aug. 29th at 11 AM at Sacred Heart Church with Rev. Joseph Driscoll officiating. Inurnment will follow in the St. Michael’s Mausoleum at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Funeral services are under the direction of Devanny-Condron Funeral Home.

 

Because of Roger’s colorful nature, the family is requesting that those attending the funeral wear bright colorful attire.

 

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made payable to “Mt. Carmel Care Center Activites, Dept.” and mailed to the Funeral Home at 40 Maplewood Ave. Pittsfield, MA 01201
